That's a great idea, Jay, and I'll support it if we can pin it down. I'll say that to show the film on PBS, I still needed to get a $3,300 insurance policy EVEN THOUGH the broadcast was allowed through the compulsory licensing provision of US copyright law.

Also: I've gone into schools to talk about Elvis and the Beatles through my childrens books. I'd be totally game to do the same with Do It Again.

In my understanding, almost all PBS shows come with an "educational license" -- which means teachers and educators can make copies of of the shows and use them under certain conditions. I saw that Do It Again had this fair use license on one of the PBS stations' websites. Supposedly, part of the deal is that the content is supposed to be erased or destroyed after a certain period of time. But for non-commercial uses, my understanding is that the ability to use the content is fairly liberal.

So if you have a copy of Do It Again recorded from one of the PBS showings, you can show it, share it, etc. privately, but not sell it or rebroadcast it. If you are an educator or teacher using it in an "educational setting," you can show it publicly.

Then it's a moral and ethical dilemma of what to do with the copy from there. I think the natural course would be that Kinks fans could share it within these parameters without breaking any laws.

Of course, I'd much rather see Geoff be able to sell it as a 90-minute DVD and I'd be among the first to order it. But as a teacher, I'd also gladly take a free 60-minute PBS copy for my archives and donate a copy to my school.

I'm just saying.

Here are the guidelines.

Might I suggest not a surrender, but a strategic retreat? You made a brave, wonderful, beautiful film. I count myself lucky to have seen it, and I hope eventually other people should get a chance to see it and love it. But maybe the time is not yet right.

Geoff, it was an incredible learning experience. Think of all the mistakes you will never make again. We're close in age, you and I, me older though. Why waste time battling with a troll? You can do your next movie or book or just be an incredible father. Any are more important than beating your head against that wall. On the bright side, what happens to the rights once Mr. Davies, er, shuffles "off stage"?

If nothing more, you should schedule the occasional screening in Boston and tell cautionary tales to Emerson students and other filmmakers.

Think of this as your boot camp and move on to the next challenge. Best wishes!

p.s./Actually, OPB aired your *wonderful* documentary last night, 30 Dec (w/repeat scheduled for tomorrow).

I hope your sweet daughter enjoyed that lobster dinner, and that you enjoyed the ride. Well, obviously you did. Fantastic work. No fail involved. "Do it again!"

Happy 2012 ~

Christmas came 10 days early this year! What a great show. I have been following the Kinks for years. This film was like "Field of Dreams" meeting a documentary where someone chases his dreams realizing it is a crazy wonderful idea. But what made this show absolutely brilliant was your Geoff Edgers reaching out to such people like Paul Weller, Sting, Robyn Hitchcock and Peter Buck, among others! So many of my favorite bands. It was an incredible journey. I found myself sitting in the living room and singing "Waterloo Sunset," "Lola," and "David Watts." I was hoping he'd get Dave to sing "Death of Clown" but Dave opted for "Stranger." Personally, my favorite Dave Davies song was "Imagination's Real" which came out in the early 1980s and went nowhere commercially. Well done!!

Geoff...I just finished watching "Do It Again" here in the Philadelphia suburbs. I've been a fan nearly 50 years. What strikes me the most about The Kinks is their extreme breadth of material. I mean, they sang about everything. Many people just do not know their melodic side. I have been listening extensively to Ray's new album, "See My Friends", and several of those melodies just seem to come alive, no matter who is singing. Your documentary did make me sad. It's not right that the guys can't get together. Maybe I'm trying to re-create my youth, I don't know. Dave seemed genuinely sad that he couldn't play again with Ray. Geez, guys. Just a couple of gigs to slake our thirst for Kinks' music. To be back in the "Kinkdom" would be great, but I guess we'll have to be satisfied with Ray's solo gig and a trove of Kinks music. Thanks for your efforts. If only....

Just saw your documentary on PBS (Philly WHYY), and wanted to thank you and all those involved. Really neat to hear all the different opinions and of course learn more about a band that I grew up with and just "took for granted" - your movie helped me realize just how special the kinks are. Thanks.
